Velvet smoking jackets, scarf’s that could conceivable cover an entire human body,  crickety cricket wear; Barbara Kidd has taken the Doctor down some usual sartorial routes and now she’s returning to the series for the Christmas special and the next series.

Kidd worked on Doctor Who at the beginning of her career creating costumes for the ‘Dandy Doctor’ Jon Pertwee in Frontier in Space in 1973. She worked regularly throughout the seventies on The Green Death, Invasion of the Dinosaurs and The Monster of Peladon.

She also designed costumes for the Fourth Doctor adventures The Ark in Space, The Sontaran Experiment, Genesis of the Daleks and Pyramids of Mars.

Her final contribution was for the Peter Davison story Kinda.

Kidd is a BAFTA Award winning designer for Charles Dickens adaptation The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby in 2002 and was nominated again in 2009 for another Dickens adaptation, Little Dorrit which featured a raft of past and present Doctor Who actors including Arthur Darvill, Eve Myles, Bill Paterson, Freema Agyeman and Russell Tovey.

Recently she has been working on the Wallander the BBC’s adaptation of the Swedish detective novel series by Henning Mankel which features Kenneth Branagh in the titular role.

Doctor Who will also have a new producer for the 2010 Christmas Special in the shape of Sanne Wohlenberg.

Wohlenberg also worked on Wallander (the first tabloid to produce the ‘Kenneth Branagh to appear in Who’ headline automatically wins the coveted Kasterborous ‘Hack of the Week’ award) as well as Murphy’s Law and The Whistleblowers.
